  SBY TO OFFICILLY OPEN
LOMBOK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AT THE END OF JANUARY

After some delays, the official opening of Lombok Internsional Airport at Desa Tanak Awu Pujut is planned for January 31, 2010. This was announced by the chairman of the commission DPRD NTB, Ir.Misbach Mulydi, in a visit to Central Lombok District. The Airport will be opened by the re-elected Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The Airport management company Angkasa Pura has confirmed that the actual construction will be finished in January, so the airport could certainly be officially opened in January too.

Although the construction is virtually finished it will not be possible to start operations immediately. There will be delay of at least two months until March or early April. This is because the operational support facilities need to be prepared and other smaller problems need to be ironed out.

One of the biggest obstacles the airport faces is the road access. Angkasa Pura admitted that they were quite concerned with this issue. If the road construction could not be resolved quickly then the efficiency of the airport could not be maximized. If the airport were to start running with the road construction in its present state it is feared that there would be traffic congestion in and out of the airport.

"The Airport, has a very vital function to perform in order to boost the economy of the area. Therefore the acceleration of the development and fixing the problem should get an absolute priority." Misbach concludes.
